{"id":1806,"date":"2017-01-19T10:58:01","date_gmt":"2017-01-19T10:58:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/clc.sllf.qmul.ac.uk\/?p=1806"},"modified":"2023-11-17T10:19:59","modified_gmt":"2023-11-17T10:19:59","slug":"fake-deep","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/clc.sllf.qmul.ac.uk\/?p=1806","title":{"rendered":"Fake Deep, Cecile Emeke (2014)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"left-column\">\n<p><center><\/center><\/p>\n<div style=\"position: relative; height: 0; padding-bottom: 56.25%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"position: absolute; width: 100%; height: 100%; left: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FUbnCv7749o?ecver=2\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s the one who talks of women as \u201cpieces of art\u201d<br \/>\nto be lured at by the male gaze<br \/>\nOf course that\u2019s why we exist,<br \/>\nto appease and gain your oh so great praise<br \/>\nAnd if you hop on and affirm,<br \/>\nthen you earn some cool points for enabling his ways<br \/>\nHe\u2019ll say your down &#8211;<br \/>\nbut what use is ignorant acclaim?<br \/>\nBut I don\u2019t blame you trying to gain any crumbs that remain<br \/>\nI can feel like the only option in the<br \/>\n&#8216;Male Monopolised Monopoly&#8217; game<\/p>\n<p>Or sometimes he prefers mammy-esque caricatures<br \/>\nThat are \u201cbiologically\u201d designed to nurture<br \/>\nAnd bear stress<br \/>\nGood strong black women, but what about an existence that<br \/>\ndoesn\u2019t require a permanent strength harness<br \/>\noh right,<br \/>\nborn to bear the burden,<br \/>\nthat\u2019s why we win Oscars as whores, victims, maids and servants &#8211;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"right-column\">\n<br \/>\nEmeke demonstrates the problematic nature of black femininity as she considers the impact of negative images that are currently used in media. This is counteracted by representing a spectrum of millennial black women here; a form of resistance. She singles men, politics and art as sources of oppression. Women are \u2018pieces of art\u2019, the \u2018male gaze\u2019 lures at them; the irony of tone depicts the dissatisfaction of these associations. \u2018Oh so great praise\u2019 and \u2018ignorant acclaim\u2019 enhance the disillusionment of these ideas, which have become problematic for the millennial.
